The Monroe Historical Society is a NY State chartered non profit organization dedicated to the preservation of our local heritage.

The Monroe Historical Society is an outgrowth of the Town of Monroe Bicentennial Commission which was formed in August 1974 to celebrate our nation’s 200th birthday.   The original officers of the commission were Harry A. Armstrong- Chairman, Irving Hammerman- Co-Chairman, Rathann S. Hynes- Secretary, James A. Nelson-Treasurer , and James G. Sweeney-Legal Advisor. Board of Directors were William C. Rogers, Ruth Armstrong, Morris Simon, Jack Hynes, Sr., and Elias Weiss. Other members were Howell Griffin, Jack Marshall, Jeff Weiss, Evelyn S. Sweeney, Paul Simon, Jack Hynes, Jr., Norbert Hellman and Arthur Blackwell.

Upon the end of the Bicentennial celebrations the funds left over from the celebration were donated to help build the recreation building at Smith’s Clove Park.  A number of members continued to meet monthly to discuss local history and collect historic artifacts. In early 1980 the members of the Bicentennial Commission decided to dissolve the commission and form a historical society in its place.   The first president was Irving Hammerman, Vice President William C. Rogers, Secretary Howell Griffen, Treasurer James A. Nelson, Directors: Donald S. Gaunt, Donald Wise, and William Bell Jr.

The Historical Society was granted an absolute charter from the State Education Department in 1990. The Society is very active preserving the history of its town and villages for future generations to enjoy. The Society meets every second Saturday of the month at the lower level of the Monroe Senior Center.

The Monroe Historical Society gratefully acknowledges the ongoing support and assistance of the Monroe Town Historian James A. Nelson and the Village of Monroe Historian Linda Burroughs.
